Anticipation

This is the third try to take this National Geographic/Lindblad small boat trip around the Baltic Sea.  Originally we were supposed to go in the spring of 2020, but COVID delayed that to the spring of 2021 and then COVID again delayed it to the spring of 2022.  So, for the past 3 years we've been looking forward to visiting Lubeck, Germany; Gdansk, Poland; Klaipeda, Lithuania; Riga, Latvia; Tallinn, Estonia; St. Petersburg, Russia; Stockholm, Sweden; and Copenhagen, Denmark on the National Geographic Explorer.  A great itinerary.

But now, Russia has invaded Ukraine, and all is different.  There will be no stops in Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and, especially, not in Russia.  But the trip is going!  Where?  Well, we start in Copenhagen and will go to Lubeck, Christianso and Bornholm Islands, Oland, Kalmar, Mariehamn in Aland, Kotka, and then a couple of days in Helsinki.  From there, we'll go along the coast of Finland, to the Stockholm Archipelago, and spend a day in Stockholm.  From there to Visby, then along the southern archipelago of Sweden and finally back to Copenhagen.

We've never heard of most of these places.  I'm willing to bet no one reading this has either.  So, let's learn together what's there to see.  Yes, we could have cancelled again, but...

So, we'll leave Saturday for Copenhagen where we'll spend three days on our own before boarding the ship next Wednesday, May 25.  Let's hope I have lots to write about and beautiful photos to share.  If not, this will be a very sparse blog.

The next post will be from Copenhagen.  Farvel for nu.
